I loved this so much Jen -- and not just because you gave me a shout-out! We need to be directly addressing the role of fear in our parenting culture. There's definitely a place for it to protect our children, but right now the fear is so diffuse we aren't effectively detecting true threats. Thank you for being such an honest and real voice in the parenting world!
I don't wanna watch this show. And I am a little fatigued by the "what are we gonna do with these boys" pieces. I'm going to keep doing what I do every day (or trying to) is what.
I love this, Jen! For the same reasons, I strenuously try to avoid being used for "expert quotes" in articles that fit the theme "10 Ways You Are Messing Up Your Kids Forever!!!" Not helpful. Not kind.
Love this. I have girls, but great topic. Totally relate to the by-line woes… it’s work to find publications that want truth and nuance! You’re so correct that most don’t.
I think some of the difficulty (in finding publications that want truth is nuance) is that everything's gotten shorter. Articles, sure -- and then that all get distilled down to a quick hit social media post/video.
Y'all: Emily Edlynn, who I referenced in this post, co-incidentally published her own take on the "helpfulness" of fear & scary videos as well - https://emilyedlynn.substack.com/p/panic-at-the-pto-how-do-we-prevent
So worth a read!
You've articulated this challenge so beautifully, Jennifer.
Thank you!!!
Thanks, Oona. I appreciate you sharing it as well!

This is such a powerful phrase -- "right now the fear is so diffuse we aren't effectively detecting true threats"

Brava!
Thanks for this! I have no interest in Adolescence, but I really needed someone to say "focus on loving your kids" today.
I'm so glad it came across your feed/inbox today then!
I appreciate this take, Jennifer!

Love your take on this!
I'd love to hear yours sometime too :)
